Program Description
What makes wines from the same region so different in character? The answer lies in the grapes, the soil, the winemaking techniques and the traditions passed down through generations. On this trip from Valencia to the Utiel-Requena wine region, you'll discover this fascinating world first-hand. You'll visit two wineries, stroll among the vines and sample local wines right where they're produced.
Less than an hour from Valencia lies Utiel-Requena, a region with a winemaking heritage dating back to the 7th century BC. Its towns and villages have been closely connected to grape cultivation for generations, while the wines produced here carry the Denominación de Origen Utiel-Requena designation of origin. As you explore the vineyards, you'll learn about the journey from grapes ripening on the vines to the different stages of winemaking.
Visiting the region is particularly interesting during the harvest season. In August and September, you may have the opportunity to taste grapes straight from the vines, while in October, you can take part in traditional grape treading. It's a chance to experience winemaking not just through stories, but also through activities connected with life in the vineyards.
One of the main stops on your tour will be Murviedro Historic Winery in Requena. During your visit, you'll discover the history of local winemaking and learn more about traditional methods of producing and storing wine. Afterwards, you'll enjoy a wine tasting, where you can explore some of the region's distinctive flavours and discover what makes its wines special.
Your next wine experience awaits at Vera de Estenas Winery in Utiel. At this second winery, you'll uncover more about the winemaking process and gain a different perspective on the area's traditions. You'll also take part in another wine tasting, giving you the opportunity to compare flavours and appreciate the diversity of the Utiel-Requena region.
Between winery visits, you'll also discover the landscapes and villages that have long been shaped by wine production. Vineyards, small settlements and the stories of local communities create a setting that reveals just how deeply winemaking is woven into life in this part of Spain.
This trip to Utiel-Requena offers a different way to appreciate Spanish wine - not simply as a drink served with a meal, but as the result of centuries of tradition and the dedication of local producers. Two wineries, two opportunities to explore regional flavours and plenty of fascinating insights that may give your next glass of wine a whole new meaning.
The order of visits and the itinerary may be subject to change.
